Pike Street, between Chicago Avenue and North Third Street, is now open to traffic.
The Pike Street corridor was closed in April to allow the reconstruction of the Elkhart River bridge as part of Phase 1 of the US 33 Northern Connector Project.
Though the bridge was reopened, Pike remained closed between North Third and North Fifth streets in June for Phase 2 of the project.
Pike Street remains closed between Third and Fifth Streets, and is scheduled to reopen mid-October.
Knowing how busy Pike Street and the Elkhart River bridge are, contractor Rieth-Riley Construction Inc. decided to work harder to get a portion of the road open sooner. They opened the part between Chicago and Third streets almost three weeks ahead of schedule.
The new detour for US 33, going north, is Main Street to Lincoln Avenue, to Third Street to Pike.
